Typed transcripts of letters to David Ports, Sarah's brother, back in Maryland. Tells of their trip west, describes Illinois and where they are living. Describes the houses Smith and his father-in-law have built. Gives family news, prices of land and various other items and how much is paid for crops and livestock. Gives Ports the directions for getting to Illinois in the easiest and safest way. Letter, 1844, explains his financial situation and the reasons for moving to Cherry Grove. Sarah also writes on some of the letters.

James H. Smith (1897-1952) joined the United States Army in 1914 and served under General Pershing in the Mexican Campaign in 1916. He fought with the United States Army in France during World War I and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star for combat action and critical injuries sustained in July 1918 at the Battle of Chateau-Thierry. After reenlisting with the U.S. Army after WWI as a recrutier, he became chief recruiting coordinator of Western Pennsylvania, Northern West Virginia, ...
